The Chargers held Kansas City scoreless in the first half today, extending their streak of shutting out the Chiefs to eight quarters, dating to 2010. The Chiefs broke the scoreless streak with a touchdown early in the third quarter.
At halftime, the Chargers held the Chiefs to no first downs and 34 total yards. According to league statistics, it’s the first time in at least the last 20 NFL seasons that the Chargers have played an entire half without allowing a first down.
Ryan Mathews had two rushing touchdowns today, his most in a game at Qualcomm Stadium. Mathews’ 98 yards were also a home best.
The Chiefs missed their first field goal attempt of the game today, ending a streak of 35-straight made field goals by Chargers opponents (preseason, regular season and postseason). Prior to today’s game, the last kicker to miss a field goal against the Chargers was Dallas’Nick Folk (42 yards) back on Dec. 13, 2009.
Nick Novak made his first field goal as Charger today from 35 yards in the second quarter, his first field goal in an NFL regular-season game came on Oct. 19, 2008 when he was kicking for the Chiefs. Novak later added a 41-yarder to go 2-for-2 on the day.
The Chargers’ 15-play touchdown drive in the second quarter today was the Chargers longest scoring drive since a 15-play touchdown drive against Tennessee Oct. 31, 2010.
Kansas City had an 18-play field goal drive in the fourth quarter. It was the longest drive against the Chargers since an 18-play field goal drive by Philadelphia on Oct. 18, 1998.
Eric Weddle’s fourth quarter safety was the Chargers’ first of the season by a member of the team’s secondary. It was his seventh career interception.
The Chargers reported two injuries today: Quentin Jammer (hamstring) and Jacques Cesaire (knee).
